Serving mineral, fossil and lapidary clubs in central Canada since 1969

The CCFMS serves as a collective voice for a number of rock, mineral, fossil and lapidary clubs located in central Canada.

Objectives:

  • One of the principal objectives of the CCFMS is to encourage close association, co-operation, and exchange of information among our member clubs, as well any other clubs, societies, federations, institutions, organizations and others interested in geology, minerals, fossils, and the lapidary arts.
  • We serve clubs, by striving to foster good will, friendship and rapport among our clubs and related organizations.
  • We assist our member clubs to encourage and promote mineralogy and earth sciences, to protect geological, mineralogical, and fossil collecting sites, to understand the law, to educate collectors (AKA rockhounds), to adopt safety protocols, and to promote the lapidary arts and lapidary training.

In Memoriam

Calvin Jones

Calvin Jones assisted the CCFMS for many years in the role of president, past president, vice president, and chair of the Lapidary Committee. There is no doubt that the work CCFMS has done for our member clubs over the last decade has benefitted from Calvin’s ideas and his desire to get things done. Despite serious health issues that plagued him over the last two years of his life, Calvin chaired the CCFMS Lapidary Committee, which produced the CCFMS Lapidary Kit, a manual designed to help member clubs start up a Lapidary Workshop for their members, or make improvements to the workshop they already have. As noted in the dedication inside the Lapidary Kit, “Calvin’s knowledge and enthusiasm for the lapidary arts helped in the crafting of every page.”

Ashley Pollock

The Board of Directors of the CCFMS is very sad to tell you that our President Ashley Pollock died earlier in April after a courageous battle with cancer. The obituary written by Ashley’s family can be found by following this link: https://memorials.ccbscares.ca/janet-pollock/5579980/. Ashley became President of the CCFMS in the fall of 2021, and accomplished a great deal since then. After Ashley’s death, Calvin Jones, acting President, said that Ashley’s “ideas had changed and enlightened the Board,” and that Ashley was a “real go-getter, hard working and quick-minded.” The rest of the Board added that Ashley was a powerhouse for the CCFMS, a dedicated and wonderful person, that Ashley was an inspiration and a motivator, a visionary, always positive, a good leader who inspired the Board to get a lot done, and that Board members had a fantastic experience working with Ashley. The Board concluded that Ashley will be greatly missed.
